Once we got the big red one started and got around the corner from the house, it died again. To be perfectly honest, I was MAD! I wanted to ride in the dry hills! Along those beautiful dirt filled hills that helped me to almost meet my maker on a rainy Memorial Day ride in 2008. That's a whole different story though.

February 2009
At some point in Jan/Feb my students earned enough points to have a party. Unfortunately they voted on a "chip and pop" party. This would have been great but if my memory serves me right, it was slated to be on Tuesday of Valentine's week. Two parties in the same week is what this translates to!
Now on to Valentine's. At our school, the norm is to send out a letter that says, here's the party info, what do you want to send? The parents fill it out and the kids bring it back. I didn't get many back. NONE for cupcakes, a few cookies, a juice. It should have been a laid back party in Room 1.
The kids started bringing stuff right off the bat in the morning. Things from kids who hadn't signed up for anything! I had a kid bring in 24 cupcakes. Guess how may kids we have in our class? 25! I waited to see if (please) someone would be absent, but who is absent on party day? NO ONE! I had a friend bring a 6 pack of cup cakes from Safeway. $4.99 I'll never see again. (I'm getting sarcastic! Sorry!)
The kids were out of control on sugar, and you can see why from the picture below. When it was all said and done, 96 cupcakes were brought to my claassroom! 96! 96 + 6= 102, which was 2 more than needed to give all of the kids 4 cupcakes each! I actually handed out all of the food along with a big zippy bag for each kid. I made them put all of their cookies and cupcakes but 1 in the bag. So all they ate were the veggies/fruit that was brought and 1 cupcake and 1 cookie. But seriously, 102 cupcakes!

New Pictures
I was looking at all of the pictures on my camera that I had great intentions of posting on here! I have tons of funny stories with pictures to prove them. I will get around to this when I remember to bring my camera in from my rig. There is snow on the ground and I am WAY too lazy to walk outside and get it. Be ready to learn about:
*trying to pull start a 4 wheeler in S. Idaho during spring break.
*Chip and pop party at school
*Making peanut butter at school
*Valentine's and the incredible food disaster (at school)
This is turning into a fortune cookie joke. When you open your fortune cookie and read it to the table do you say, "in the bathroom" after you read it? :)
Today I went to a Cowboy themed Thai restaurant! It was pretty much the best food ever! I have never had Thai food! It was cowboy themed because it used to be a country bar! Now it's a Thai restaurant with cow hide seats! Crispy Orange Chicken, I love you!

Jeopardy Review Night
I am taking classes to complete two endorsements right now, one in reading, the other in ESOL. I was in my linguistics class the other night and we were doing a Jeopardy review before our final which is tomorrow. I made up 3 questions out of one of the chapters and was having a really hard time thinking of the last one. Here is what I came up with: (it was all written on the back on a 3x5 index card)
Homonyms are words that sound the same but are spelled differently.
Here is a joke: What is a smelly chicken? A foul fowl
You have 30 seconds to make up your own homonym joke... GO!
The professor was laughing so hard she could barely finish reading my question and the class was laughing and no one could come up with one for the longest time! Finally someone said a hoarse horse but they didn't make up the joke. I gave them partial points!
You WILL be entertained when you take a class with me!

When Crazy Happens
We played in our last 4-way of the volleyball season today. We had a lighthearted ride up the mountain and stopped at Wal-Mart on our way through La Grande. We headed toward Elgin ready to play some volleyball having a jolly good time.
Then it happened. We showed up at the school.
Now I could leave it like this and everyone in Stanfield would already know what happened. Whenever you go and play a sport on the mountain you get refs that try to screw you at every turn. It's almost embarassing to be part of the whole thing, but you certainly get used to it. I'm not the kind that blames losses on the refs or the line judges. I just like when people call a fair game.
We played Weston McEwen. The refs called a good game. They had nothing invested in either team because we were both from down the mountain. Then we started to warm up to play Elgin and something foul started stinkin' up the place.
First we only had 2 balls to warm up 12 girls with. The home team took their entire ball cart and wouldn't let us have more. (Just wait until they come to our gym and get a basket full of flat balls next season:) kidding! kind of).
Then the game started. We lost the first game but played with them the whole time. They pulled away toward the end and we couldn't recover. During that game we actually got to kit the ball 6 times on our own side! It was crazy, it was like the refs forgot to count and we just started playing hot potato.
We switched sides and started what I will now refer to as, "the game where the crap hit the fan." We were getting crazy calls! Like net calls when we didn't even have a block up. It was ridiculous. Finally enough was enough and we did what we do best. Laughed about it. The head coach said, "Well I guess we can't block this game." Which was true because we kept on getting net calls. Either way, whether they were being fair or not, we needed to pull off. The ref looked down our bench and walked over to her faster than when a fat kid eats cake. It was unbelievable. She got right in her face and said, "Do you have something you need to say to me?"
Now let me stop here. When a ref is feeling attacked or threatened they are more than welcome to GIVE A WARNING OR YELLOW CARD to the offending person. I am pretty sure they aren't allowed to rush the bench and have it out with the coach. That's where this lady went wrong.
Continuing on. The coach said, "No. I was talking to my team." The ref said, "No you were being sarcastic." Coach just stared at her. She finally pulled her panties out of their wad and walked back to ref the game. It was hilarious.
Now would I waste all of this time just for this one instance? NO! Let's keep on going. Not even 3 serves later the down ref (the bench rusher) blows her whistle. The down ref NEVER blows their whistle! She blew her whistle in order to remind the home coach to SUB! She said, "Don't forget to sub," and their coach shoved someone into the game. Seriously, are you kidding me. Their assisant coach should be fired. It's her job to remind the coach when to sub, not the refs job. We sat there dumbfounded. Seventy-four net calls later and that game was over and we lost it too (go figure).
The third game was upon us. Would this be it? Would we lose to this crazy regime in 3? Coach turned her line up sheet in to the scorer's table while I was over talking to the girls in the huddle. One of our girls said, "Doesn't that ref look like the office assistant in Monster's Inc?" We were giggling and laughing. Another comment was made, "You know what, I bet she's a mom for the other team." Which would have made complete sense but, unfortunately, also made us laugh. That was a mistake! Laughing during a volleyball game is a capital offense in the Blue Mountains, punishable by... A RED CARD!
I guess when we were laughing in our huddle some of our players looked at that ref. Of course she assumed we were talking about her, which we were, but she heard none of it because I was watching her the whole time. She wasn't even paying attention to us until she heard us laughing. We sat on the bench, at the end of it this time, and our girls went to their spots on the floor.
THE NEXT THING I KNOW I have a piece of construction paper (which was yellow) being poked into my face and the ref yelling. "You need to be an example to these girls! Do you want to start off this game with a red card?" We stared at her like she was a moron (think of Diary of a Wimpy Kid for a description of moron) because she was holding a yellow card out. I held my tongue because I was about to say, "1. That's a yellow card not a red card, and 2. What the heck did we say?" But I knew she would have thrown one or both of us out if we talked to we stared at her. She finally walked away and our whole bench was in a fight of silent laughter at this time. It was freaking unreal.
Had this upstanding Elgin citizen been thinking, she should have given our bench a warning to start with rather than trying to start a fight. But what do you expect when you play in the former Wapati League?
Now of course you always think of what you should have said AFTER!
When she asked if we wanted a red card, it was pointed out to us that we should have said, "no we want a pink card."
When she first said that coach was being sarcastic, coach should have said, "What did I say." And when she repeated it she should have said, "Haha, now I got you to say it too!" (that one was mine)

Ben's Wedding
I just spent the weekend in Beaverton, OR. My mom and I went over on Friday after work and stayed until Sunday. We saw family, ate too much, shopped too much, and went to my cousin Ben's wedding. It was fun to catch up with everyone that went. We saw some family from Pullman, WA that we hadn't seen in years! That included my 88 year old great aunt who is absolutely adorable!
Ben and Alice got married on Saturday night and we got there 1.5 hours early! Who does that? We were under the impression that we were going to Salem early to hang out at my Uncle Steve's house. That was not the case and we had no where to go, so we headed to Independence, OR to the Greenvilla Barn. The wedding was nice and it was fun to see family and folks that I hadn't seen for years and years. I saw some people who sent my sister and I birthday cards every year and I had no clue who they were! It was nice to put a face to a name!

Beach Family Picnic
On Saturday we had the opportunity to meet many of our family members Wintler Park in Vancouver, WA. Some of them we hadn't seen in years even though we only live 4 hours apart! It was nice to play catch up and now we are all excited to see each other again next month at Ben's wedding!
**These are for you Jenny! Yes I'll take pictures of Ben's wedding! You'll feel like you're there...

Life Update
Update #1- I am teaching 3rd grade next year! I am excited because I will have 6 of my same students from last year and the rest of my class I will have had in math, reading, ELD, science, or Social Studies. I basically know them all and am excited to see them continue to grow for another year. We'll see if I loop with them to 4th grade.
Update #2- Two weeks after the lease on my rental house was up, my landlord up and sold my house. So now I am house (rental) shopping... we'll see what turns up!
Update #3- I am coaching volleyball again as the assistant at my old HS. I am wayyy excited already! We started open gym last week and had an amazing turnout! 14 girls the first night. We had fun and got some work done and I am totally pumped to see what we turn out like this year. There is much to anticipate...

Making Lumpia
Finally fry them on both sides in EVOO. Don't burn them! Serve them hot with rice and a mixture of soy sauce with rice wine vinegar drizzled over the top. Super good!
We made like 25 of them and ate pretty much all of them! I think my sister had some the next day for breakfast, but we ate a ton. Usually I eat them with ketchup, (not traditional:) but this time I just used the soy sauce and rice vinegar on top! Amazing!

Catch-up Time
Well many moons have passed since I have been blogging (Thanks Jessica for reminding me!)
Here are some one-liners to catch you up with me!
We were learning about natural resources and learned that rocks are a natural resource.
Me: "What can you use rocks for?"
C: "You can use them to make an ax."
Me: "That would take a lot of work!"
C: "I know all about that kind of stuff. I have a little Indian blood in me."
One student lost his winter coat before Christmas so he got a new one. He has lost the new one 2x now! He lost it again on Friday and the kids from his class were looking all over for it.
Mrs. C: Where is that coat?
S: Mrs. C? (In a very somber and quiet voice, which this kid isn't) I am the suckiest kid in this class.
On a T-shirt of one of my students:
Save gas! Toot in a jar! It even had a picture of a "toot" in a jar... priceless.
One of my 2nd graders came to school with his ear pierced. He said his mom pierced it that morning. I said it looked ridiculous. That probably wasn't very nice of me, but it was a gold hoop on a 7 year old! Luckily 5 mins later it fell out and I wouldn't let him put it back in!
I had one student tell another student (who just happened to be the biggest kid in our class) that he was going to "kick his A**". I wish we could still spank kids...
My new favorite book is The Boy Who Looked Like Lincoln. It's pretty funny... I hadn't ever read it clear through and found that it was not exactly school appropriate. Closed that cover pretty quickly! (no one noticed) I guess the cover should have been a dead giveaway. "Written by the guy who writes for the Simpsons!" It is still a funny book though.
